The 88 -year -old Pope Francis rested after a peaceful ninth in the Gemelli Hospital in Rome after a respiratory crisis and blood transfusions, said the Vatican on Sunday.

The update came after the doctors said Francis, who had removed part of a lung when he was younger, was in a critical condition.

It is unclear whether he was awake and ate breakfast.

The Pope suffered a longer asthmatic respiratory crisis on Saturday, while it was treated for double pneumonia and complex lung infection.

He received “high oxygen streams” to help him, and he received blood transfusions after the tests resulted in low platelet numbers, which are required for clotting.

Francis “is still vigilant and spent the day in an armchair, even though more pain than yesterday,” said the Vatican.

The doctors said that Francis’ forecast was “reserved”. Doctors have stated that his condition is touch and GO in view of his older age, fragility and his existing lung disease.

The main threat is that the infection enters the bloodstream, a serious illness that is known as sepsis said the doctors.
