On Thursday, Jim Cramer, moderator of Mad Money, described the 145% suspension of China as so extreme that it is essentially more likely to act as an embargo than as a conventional tariff.

“We now have 145% tariff for Chinese goods. Now, a number that is openly said is not a tariff. It is more of an embargo. Almost nobody will pay so much markup. It is a recipe to lose money.”

Cramer said that he believes that Trump was more frustrated about earlier administrations for what he allows as China to take advantage of the US trade policy than with President Xi Jinping himself, of which Trump continues to speak respectfully. While Cramer recognized that he sympathized with Trump’s goal, he warned that the country is not willing to deal with the consequences. “As a nation, we have become addicted to cheap Chinese imports,” he said

“I think what we saw today was the beginning of a sorting period between those who have no China exposure and those who do this. Unfortunately, those who employ many people are excellent companies, but they may not be excellent enough to create this new environment, and that is a real shame.”

Cramer emphasized that although he believes that the United States can work without economic relationships with China, but this would increase significantly domestic costs, increase unemployment and force dependence on other global partners. The missions, he said, are enormous. “Yes, we have to take it over now or never,” he said, but he warned that the consequences will contain more pain than the public is likely to accept.
