A few years ago, a young man named Devin Howard came to my charitable project Project Hood on the south side of Chicago. Like most children here, Devin grew up in a world of violence and poverty in which a wrong turn or wrong movement can have bad consequences. However, Devin always had the strong inner drive to become someone.
He went to school in the nearby Urban Prep, where he played football and graduated with a 3.8 GPA. Then he went to Eastern Illinois University, where his goal was to become a nurse. But something was wrong. The school did not work for him and he was not interested in nursing.
So he went and returned to my neighborhood, where he may endanger his future by moving back into the danger zone. He even made the hasty decision to join the navy just to return on the day he can stand out. Was Devin still a lost soul? Would he find his fire, his passion? Or would the neighborhood consume it?

But Devin continued to search and when he came to me, he first said what he said: “I hear that you have a carpenter program.” I told him that we were able to apply more than welcome. I created this program because I believe in the trades as a way out. I went to college myself, but I know that it is not for everyone. I saw a lot of people getting out and there were no trade courses to break their fall.
Whenever I’m over at a construction site, I wonder if Devin manages it – what a wonderful feeling.
It is something magical to work with your hands and create something. It’s not for everyone, but we have long denied our youth to learn that Craft And to be very proud of it.

Devin quickly climbed to the top of his construction class and never missed a day. When he received certification after the certification, he met a man named Bill who was the CEO of Reed Construction. Devin got Bill’s business card.
Then The pandemic struckCutty devinn job search. He thought about stopping. But one day when he cleaned up his room, he pushed on Bill’s card and left him a voice message. Bill called back on the same day and landed the task of the project engineer.
This should be a boy who ended up in the gangs or on the street.
Now he had a job for which he was passionate.
That’s why I believe in the trades so much and will make it a presented part of the community center that I am building. It is known to know that many other Americans also believe in business as a way forward. I recently heard Jan Jekielek interview Mike Rowe about like New Hampshire, North Dakota and South Dakota Live the shops in schools. Rowe said: “You have a huge campaign to get the shop class back in schools … welding, electrician, HLK, sanitary, woodworking, automotive repair.”
I wish you would come Illinois Since I cannot keep up with the demand for trades. I know that the reconstruction of the trades infrastructure and the community is the key to better America.

Shortly after his attitude, Devin was promoted to project manager and now sees several projects all over the city. Whenever I’m over at a construction site, I wonder if Devin manages it – what a wonderful feeling.
I recently asked him to speak to the final class of electricians. He said something that I and most people in this room were never forgotten: “Poverty ran my family until she came up with me.”
