Keely Hodgkinson won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024 award, while runner-up Luke Littler won the Young SPOTY award.
Hodgkinson completed her rise to athletics superstardom by winning gold in the 800m for Great Britain at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Littler, who took part in last year’s World Darts Championship as a 16-year-old, was beaten in the final at Alexandra Palace but his success has had an incredible impact on the sport’s popularity.
Joe Root, who became England’s all-time leading Test run-scorer in October, came third. Sarah Storey, Alex Yee and Jude Bellingham were the other finalists for the public vote.
Hodgkinson burst onto the world stage at the age of 19 by winning the silver medal in the 800m at the Tokyo Olympics.
Few outside the British athletics scene had heard of her at this point, but those who did knew she was destined for stardom.
She won two World Championship silver medals before finally having a golden evening in Paris at the beginning of August.
Hodgkinson’s success makes it an unprecedented fourth consecutive year that the award has been won by a woman, following Mary Earps in 2023, Beth Mead in 2022 and Emma Raducanu in 2021.
Littler had a sensational year in 2024, claiming ten titles, including his first major title at the Grand Slam of Darts, a feat previously achieved only by Phil Taylor, Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright.
Littler’s meteoric rise has seen him become the sport’s poster boy, with the likes of David Beckham sending him good luck messages as he rose from youth world champion to the centerpiece of professional football.
Super League champions Wigan Warriors were named Team of the Year after winning four trophies in the historic 2024.
The Warriors started the season with a win over Australia’s three-time NRL champions Penrith Panthers to win the World Club Challenge.
They then won the Challenge Cup and the League Leaders’ Shield before defeating Hull KR in the Grand Final at Old Trafford in October.
It is only the third time in the award’s history that a rugby league club has won it, with Wigan contributing to their triumph in 1994 and St Helens’ win in 2006.
