Video game adjustments continue to make a big splash in Hollywood. A Minecraft film deserved Over $ 900 million Worldwide in cinemas. Season two from HBOS The last of us Incended enthusiastic reviews with a third season. And more gaming-based films and television programs-in one thing the second season of Amazon’s Stand out and a sequel too The Super Mario Bros. film – are on the way.
According to The Hollywood and Games Talk on the Gamesbeat Summit 2025 in Los Angeles, one thing that share all of these successful adjustments is an engagement for authenticity. They catch the spirit of the franchise on which they are based and took time to understand what made these games so special.
“I think what the top films played well can be heard the fan base,” said Maureen fan of Baobab Studios in the panel. “In Hollywood there is this (attitude):” I am the creative, I know best. “And I think the reasons why these top films are well done are actually listened to.”
Part of this is to use people for focus groups, but it is also important to talk to the original creators regularly. When working on adaptations of video game -PI, fan and your team meet with developers every month to check in and ask how your audience feels about the project.
“My background is the research of user experiences, so I really appreciate this (process). But that’s really something my team had to learn,” said Fan. “My co-founder staged all Madagascar films. My co-chief creative officer was the only producer of Moana. But in recent years, how many years we have been, you now have the point where you long for data.
Another factor is the talent behind the camera. While film and television companies seem to be in a race to hunting Big Gaming IP, Alcon Interactive President George Collins believes that it is becoming increasingly important to combine these properties with the right directors and writers, especially those who have a unique point of view or can say something new with the brand.
“If you think of things like Greta Gerwig, the Barbie to Barbie or (Phil) Lord and (Christopher) Miller, who make Lego, these really kitschy, terrible films could have been,” said Collins. “But because they really had a (specific) idea, they took them in directions that they would not have expected. She did it well.”
But as successful as this most recent series of films and television programs was, there are still many big names like Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto that have not yet made the jump to Hollywood. For Dan Prigg, head of Skydance Interactive, one of the main reasons has to do with costs.
“You won’t get a Grand theft for something cheap these days, and that is only for the license fee, right?” Said Prigg. “And then throw in the actual production value that you would have to enter in order to correspond to the degree of expectation that I think the audience (would have) (would have) – people would only look at the table and how ‘no, that’s a big risk.’ It could be a great success, but it is also a big risk.
Collins noticed that a film with Call of Duty in particular has been hovers in Hollywood for some time, but the problem is less about costs and more about the right script and the right story.
“I think it’s more like you have to script, either a pilot or a theater script you believe in,” said Collins. “You have to be able to attach people from whom you know that you can really make a good film or a good TV show, a good show runner. And it’s not as easy as you think.”
Without the right talent and the right story behind a project, you risk not only the film of the film, but also the reputation of the game and the developer. When Fan VP of Games was at Zynga, she remembered how Farmville’s success pulled someone from Hollywood who wanted to make a TV show Farmville. At that time she said no and argued that the game was already making a lot of money and did not want to risk damage his reputation.
“There are many disadvantages, because if someone makes a shitty adjustment, they will screw up my brand and endanger my main stream or my viewers, my players, right? I really have to trust that I believe in this director, I believe in this script so that I can do it,” said Fan.
