Jackson discloses making millions for memoir amid SCOTUS ethics discussions

The judge of the Supreme Court, Ketanji Brown Jackson, reported that she received her book “Lovely One: A Memoir” by Penguin Random House in 2024.

Jackson’s report on financial disclosure showed that Penguin Random House paid her a book advance of $ 2,068,750 in 2024. The company also provided reimbursements for transport, food and accommodation to promote their book at events across the country.

“Lovely One”, the title of which draws its importance of her West African birth name, was published in early September and is pursued by Amazon as “the rise of her family from the separation to her confirmation about America’s highest court within the time of a generation.”

The country covered her bay tour with stops in large cities such as San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta.

This is not the first time that Penguin Random House sent her a massive payment, as a similar disclosure report showed that the company paid its 2023 a book advance of 893,750 US dollars and brought the total to almost 3 million US dollars over two years.

The Supreme Court recently passed a formal ethics code for receiving free trip and other gifts. However, there is no current upper limit for how many judges can earn from books.

“Last month Barrett, Jackson, Gorsuch and Sotomayor withdrew from a decision about whether a case belongs to the parent company of the Penguin Random House book publisher,” The Washington Post reported. “The judges did not explain their argument to sit on the discussion, but an ethics expert said that this was probably due to the case that the case of the German company Bertelsmann, to which the publishing house belongs to or will publish their books.”
