Wladimir Klitschko is backing Oleksandr Usyk to defeat Tyson Fury when they face off live this Saturday Sky Sports box office.
Boxing legend Klitschko is being linked with an unexpected return to the sport to pursue a world heavyweight title at the record-breaking age of 48.
It was Fury who defeated the Ukrainian star in 2015 when he became unified heavyweight champion for the first time.
There was never a rematch the following year. But while Klitschko might consider fighting Fury for a world championship, he would never box his compatriot Usyk.
Klitschko said it too Sky Sports: “Oleksandr Usyk will keep me retired.
“It’s not going to happen, okay. I will remain retired. He’ll keep me retired.”
Klitschko has not boxed since his loss to Anthony Joshua in 2017. But despite being one of Ukraine’s best-known international supporters, he insists he has remained in good shape.
“I remember Oleksandr called me on my birthday at the end of March this year and said: ‘Champ, I wish you a happy birthday and I wish you that your dream of becoming the oldest champion in the world comes true.’
“I said: ‘Oleksandr, what are you talking about, your fight is coming, you are in preparation, keep me retired.’
“So he promised, ‘I’ll do it, I’ll keep it (the championship), but that’s what I wish for you.'”
Klitschko believes Usyk can retain his WBC, WBO and WBA world titles when he fights Fury this weekend.
“Olexandr will repeat history,” emphasized Klitschko. “It will be déjà vu. So repeat. That’s actually what’s happening. I was here for the first fight. It just feels the same and it looks the same and is the same.”
“It’s all about strategy. It’s all about technique.”
Klitschko fully admires Usyk and has a long connection with his Ukrainian compatriot.
“I remember when Oleksandr won the Klitschko tournament as a teenager, that amateur tournament he entered had my name on it and he became a champion. He actually looked up at me. Now I look up to him. How.” “Life is amazing,” said Klitschko.
“We’re keeping our fingers crossed that this time too he will show that he is the most evil man on the planet, Oleksandr Usyk.”
Usyk and Fury fight for the second time on Saturday at the Riyadh Season Event at the Kingdom Arena.
By winning a split decision over Fury in May, Usyk became the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, making him the undisputed ruler of the two-weight division and the first heavyweight to achieve this status since Lennox Lewis in 1999.
However, Fury is determined to avenge his first professional defeat and defeat Usyk. At Thursday’s press conference they faced each other for the first time in fight week, and neither man allowed themselves to even bat an eyelid, let alone break away from the intense staring match.
It took over 11 minutes before they finally allowed themselves to be taken away.
“It went the distance,” said promoter Alex Krassyuk Sky Sports Then the duel begins.
However, he doesn’t think the Usyk-Fury fight itself will lead to that. He gives Usyk the tip to end it early.
“I think it will end within the distance,” Krassyuk said. “I expect him (Fury) to be better prepared, much better for this one.
“So conditioning is not an issue in this fight. Perseverance is there. Technically Usyk is better, but Tyson is very good. Greatness is obviously on Tyson’s side, but what brings you victory?”
Krassyuk pointed to his head and his heart.
Then he added: “You can’t break Oleksandr Usyk. He will never back down when it comes to fighting.”
“For me it was like a complete 12-round competition,” the organizer described the stardown at the press conference.
“Mentally, it’s something that helps you win. Mental strength. Usyk has mental strength. It doesn’t matter if he’s in bad shape or good shape, he’ll find his way to victory. He invents the way to victory.”
“That’s why Tyson is nervous.”
The big heavyweight rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury will be broadcast live on Saturday, December 21st Sky Sports box office. Book Usyk v Fury 2 now!
