You are probably familiar With a box spring the simple wooden frame with springs, which acts as a support base under older Mattress. It is not a very technical device like an intelligent bed (or a trampoline, it would not be fun) – this type of mattress foundation has only lasted due to its simple and durable design. But did you notice that you may not see her so often these days?
In my opinion, contemporary mattresses as a career -mattresses are on the way to behave this additive to furniture. However, this does not mean that it is automatically started from your mattress setup scenario. Let us unpack what a box spring actually is, why you may need one or not and where you can set you and your mattress for success.
For this article I rely on my own specialist knowledge as Spencer institute–Certified Sleep Science Coach and Mattressen tester of five years as well as that by John Merwin, CEO of 3Z brands (manufacturer of Helix, Nolah, Bear and Leesa) and founder of Helix, Nolah, Bear and Leesa) Brooklyn Bettzeug.
In the past, the mattresses were not what they are now, and this time frame extends from the earliest iterations of mattresses to the present day. The support was, we simply say, quite miserable. Think completely of a bed filled with hayAnd mostly they had to work together. The Box Spring should be a lack of support from its introduction during the At the end of the 18th century.

A box spring contains a wooden frame or a base that contains inner jumping coils or adjust coils on the basis. A fabric housing is often involved to adhere to everything. This is a conscious design selection because the coils are created in the box spring to meet the mattress on it. The wooden frame has slats to ensure that there is no stopping in the middle of the bed and at the same time gives a fundamental backup for the coils.
If we think back on the days of the old mattress days or the time before mattresses in a box, we were one thing (That was in 2004To be precise) the box spring was the prevailing piece of furniture that accompanied its mattress. Over time, Box Springs developed to support a certain type of mattress – traditional inner spring coils.
“Traditional coils are often referred to as Bonnell coils that have been used in mattresses for generations,” says John Merwin, CEO of 3Z. “You are designed in an hourglass shape in which you are wider at the top and bottom with a thinner middle to offer a combination of support and flexibility.”
But why does this coil need a box spring at all? Ultimately, it was important to ensure that Sleepers really supports the whole line, um, box spring. Traditional coils “should offer a combination of support and flexibility. However, since these coils are connected by a network of wires, they move more as a unit,” says Merwin. “This makes them more dependent on a box spring or a basis to offer proper support and absorb shock.”
