Sanupay, a payment processor based in the VAE, has worked with Payments software Platform Openway to introduce the first locally issued credit card into Ethiopia.
The credit card infrastructure is based on Openway’s Way4 platform that offers map edition, transaction acquisition, system switchover and the management of mobile wallets.
The scope of the project includes the distribution of four million debit and prepaid cards as well as 5,000 credit cards with the visa and the MasterCard insignia.
In addition, the initiative will carry out the installation of 10,000 POS terminals and the operation of 200 ATMs throughout Ethiopia, all of which are integrated into the Way4 system.
Hermann Mike, regional director of Openway Subsahara-Africa, said: “This cooperation with Sanupay reflects our commitment to strengthening innovative financial institutions throughout Africa.
“By using our Way4 platform, Ethiopia not only starts its first domestic credit card, but also lays the basis for a modern, inclusive and interoperable payment landscape.”
Oromia Bank is said to be the first issuer of these new domestic credit cards. The bank is also preparing to offer a common loyalty card in cooperation with Sheba Miles.
Santampay, who supported the start with infrastructure as a licensed payment system operator under the National Bank of Ethiopia.
In addition to Ethiopia, Sanupay has the opportunity to improve financial services in the East African region.
In Kenya, the company works with local banks and fintech companies to refine card processing systems and optimize the transfer and cross-border payment processes.
In Rwanda, Sanupay Fintech equips companies with the possibilities of spending virtual cards, using tokenization and introducing digital wallets and mobile payment integrations.
