I can’t believe that ‘Alice in Borderland’ is full, “squid fish”

Alice in Borderland is a Netflix Death Game series that has long been caught in gravitational education Squid game. The second season fell after the laughter of Squid game‘S Breakout first and the newly published third followed months later Squid game‘S. For a time the two shows felt like Twin series with Squid game As the breakout star and Alice in Borderland As a cult favorite. Her thematic overlap made comparisons inevitable, but also exciting: two cakes, cool.

Alice in Borderlandcreated by Haro Asso, the creator of ZOM 100: List of buckets of the deadfollows Arisu (Kento Yamazaki), a gamer who is one day brought to a parallel world with his friends who is known as The borderland. There Arisu and his love interest usagi (Tao Tsuchiya) compete in death games to extend their visa in the mysterious world. If you fail, you will be carried out by a laser from the sky.

Initially, Alice in Borderland stood apart. His games were cruel, cerebral and less about class war than the randomness of the universe, with psychological agony. Where Squid game leaned into the spectacle and the failure of capitalism, Alice Research into survival as self -observation. His puzzles were more like Popquiz -death traps, invited the audience to join in, to decrypt hidden information and suffer when characters bite the dust without further ado.

Nevertheless, the tone of the show succeeded in being less permanent and more local, with characters that form the provisional bonds that felt more like the summer camp comradeship in hell than a group of assholes who crossed each other twice and do not grump them over them. During his seasons, Alice in Borderland gave his line -up domestic and interpersonal depth and avoided the drops of the one -way side figures or “delighted” motivators, while he still works in the story of the death game.

Last season, Alice in Borderland With the opportunity to be more than one placeholder who has grasped the desire for psychological slaughter and narrative closures in a death game. What begins as a gripping development of the series Alice in Borderland stand apart.

IO9 2025 Spoiler

In a story that plays years after the events of the second season, Arisu returns to the Borderland to save his wife Usagi who was kidnapped and brought back to the sci-fi-Death Game area. At first it provides: the games are inventive, the operations are high and Arisus development from a hikkikomori to a husband of survival horror feels deserved. The rapidly abandoned amnesia story of the show with Arisu and Usagi is chunky, but it manages to serve the show’s science fiction mystery box well enough, so that the story can fully develop if it remember the horror of the Borderland without drawing the audience through endless scenes to restore storage.

But while the season unfolds, the similarities with Squid gameThe second and third season from randomly to Uncanny. On the one hand, Arisu and Usagi Return mirrors Spiegel Gi-Hun’s solo re-entry. While you chalk this up to Death Game series, his history-especially his moral dilemmata and trolley problem scenarios and feel like a copy paste job. Technically, Alice in Borderland I cannot be described as imitators because it was first published and its manga was completed in 2016 a full four years before the Netflix live action series. The second season also ended where the manga did.

And this is the problem: Season of three season, which is disappointed from the source material, realizes in the Canon fan fiction territory. It is Alice Return, but more with the Slapdash models from game of Thrones‘Farling eighth season.

To his recognition, Alice in Border areaThe game-like poisoned ball trains, explosive kick-the-can-can-cane and exciting card wars infected with zombie. But the “why” behind them is hellish foggy. Ryuji (Kento Kaku), the pseudo-antagonist ally of Usagi, offers vague motivations that are postponed without payment. The reason for the return of Usagi’s return to the border country, which turns out to be less kidnap than a voluntary decision between her and Ryuji, is even less defined.

In addition, a love triangle in the late stage comes between the three like a desperate gasp by drama, with Usagi and Ryuji have more chemistry than the central couple. Arisu and Usagi still feel in the early unpleasant phases of dating despite the married marriage. And in a show whose entire intrigue straps on his foundation, this is a meritorious wink in the direction of something that is worth watching as an epilogue for an otherwise great show. Alice in Borderland Go full Squid game possible in the unfounded way.

The final of the third season leans hard Squid game already seenIntroduce a defined game champion who grows poetically through nihilism and throws into a dilemma that luckily produces us a CGI baby, just to replace it with something even more absurd. The already cloudy philosophical inserts are covered by spectacle. And it is precisely if you believe that it could wrap Grace, the last episode turns towards Franchise expansion with all the subtlety of a death laser from heaven.

It is the kind of end that does not leave her breathless – it leaves her together and watch how the credits roll in a quiet resignation. Honest, Cate blanchett Haden in a embroidered suit with “IP synergia” could have gone in the front bag, and he would not have felt out of place. As proud as the show shape its imitation and repeats the same unnecessary sequel that its Twin series has transformed into one Scavenede Husk-Es is once a brilliant premiere, now a distant, distant, Commodified memory.

And that’s the tragedy. Alice in Borderland Had the bones of an outstanding Death Game series, whose original third season could have served as a decadent horse head to complete the entire stallion. His cinematography is slim, his CGI polished and his homage Dice And Battle Royale is sincere. Until now, Alice in Borderland I never drained off. But when I tried to put his hardly existing ideas into a third season, it became something for what Squid game Already: a series that was bloated according to its own success and opened the spectacle while he was starving his story.

In the Pantheon of Death Games, Squid game May have turned into the sketch of a child’s head. But Alice in Borderland I already had the outline of a complete sketch to settle down – detailed and daring. Unfortunately, the third season is the epitome of creative greed, and if not, something like it, the finish line draws and loses the plot.
