Alaska bald eagle rescued by police

The bald eagle is a symbol of American pride and strength.

But sometimes even the strong need a helping hand. And that’s exactly what happened to a beautiful bald eagle in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Officers with the Fairbanks Airport Police and firefighters were alerted Sunday by a good Samaritan that a young bald eagle needed help after it was found frozen under snow.

Authorities said the eagle was found “frozen and unable to fly.”

Police then requested assistance from the Alaska Raptor Center. The organization advised them that it was best to secure the bird in the back seat of a patrol car to make thawing easier.

In a post on Facebook, officials said the young eagle “rested peacefully in a dark, quiet corner of the station” and was picked up by an Alaska Fish & Game and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service representative who assessed the bird’s condition.

The following day, Fairbanks Airport Police released a video showing the bird of prey returning to the wild.

“After resting peacefully in a kennel in Chieftain’s Bay, fed salmon fillets and fatty steak, and getting completely dry, our little guy/wife seemed ready to fly (pun intended) out of the coop,” the department wrote Facebook.

The department called the eagle’s release the “BEST ENDING EVER.” Police said they would have liked to keep the bird as a mascot, but they released it to “do all the fun raptor things.”

The bird flew and showed no signs of resistance.

The person calling for help remained anonymous, but officials thanked the good Samaritan for his help in rescuing the young bald eagle.

In December, President Biden signed a bill officially designating the bald eagle as the national bird.

The bald eagle, depicted on the Great Seal of the United States since 1782, has its own holiday symbol protection law, Technically, it was never given the title of “national bird.”
