Colbert confronts Jean-Pierre on Biden’s mental acuity, Democratic betrayal

Late-night host Stephen Colbert battled former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre for the former president on Monday Joe BidenHis mental acuity and the accusation that the former president had been betrayed.

“It was also very personal for those of us who saw it, because it was a shock to our system to see that. Because – I mean, you’re talking to a man who helped raise $25 million for Joe Biden in March of that year,” Colbert told Jean-Pierre. “And three months later, backstage at the fundraiser I attended, I saw a man I had never seen before. He seemed like a completely different person. And at 81 years old, that’s not entirely unexpected. You can imagine why people were so concerned.”

Jean-Pierre insisted she had seen Biden every day and argued that he could govern. The former press secretary has expressed her disappointment that the Democratic Party pushed the former president out of the race, writing in her new book Independent. she couldn’t “digest” no longer be there.

“I don’t question his heart or his politics, but it takes more than that to be president of the United States. And in a moment of great pressure on the stage, we saw someone shock and disturb us.

“Disappointment is such an easy term,” Colbert replied. “It was shocking. Okay, look, listen, we’ll never agree on this other than I’m glad you came here tonight.”

During an interview with “CBS Mornings” on Monday, Jean-Pierre argued that Biden was sharp and capable of governing. CBS anchors Tony Dokoupil and Gayle King were also skeptical of Jean-Pierre’s arguments during the interview.

“So when this book landed on my desk and I saw ‘A Broken White House’ in the subtitle, I have to say, I thought you were going to say that, try hard to convince Joe Biden to get out of the race – because what we saw is what you saw, and he fought and didn’t make it – I thought you were going to say you were angry about that,” Dokoupil began. “What you say in this book is that you are angry at the people who tried to force him out.”

“Some Americans will say, ‘Seriously?'” Dokoupil said.

King said it was difficult to understand why Jean-Pierre had not seen signs of decline, pointing out that she was on the plane with Biden on the way to the June 2024 debate.

“I want to echo what Tony said because I thought that too,” King said. “You said, people said, why didn’t members of his inner circle talk about what many believe to be the apparent decline of Joe Biden, and you said you were a member of the inner circle and you never saw the decline. Afterwards I wrote, ‘How?’ You even write, Karine, that you sat with him on the plane to the debate and didn’t see anything.”
