Ivan Juric to Southampton: Former Roma coach agrees deal to replace Russell Martin as head coach | Football News

Ivan Juric has agreed an 18-month contract to become Southampton’s new head coach.

The deal includes a break option that will be reviewed this summer. Should Southampton avoid relegation this season, Juric’s contract can be extended for a further two years.

Juric is set to take over at Southampton after his release Roma last month, where he lasted less than two months.

Southampton have long been an admirer of the Croatian. The 49-year-old was already on the Saints’ list to replace Ralph Hasenhuttl when the Austrian was released two years ago.

The Saints have also contacted West Brom manager Carlos Corberan and former Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand, while Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Rohl has also been linked with the job.

The Croatian coach began his coaching career under Gian Piero Gasperini – the current revolutionary head coach at Atalanta.

Juric worked on Gasperini’s coaching staff at Inter Milan and Palermo before taking his first job at Serie C club Mantova in the 2014-15 season.

The following season he took a job in Serie B with Crotone and that season achieved promotion to Serie A for the first time in the club’s history. However, he did not take them into the Italian top flight as he was offered To replace Gasperini at Genoa, which he accepted.

Juric then played for Genoa three times in two years and was released by the club three times between February 2017 and December 2018.

In 2019 he finally found stability at Hellas Verona, who had just been promoted to Serie A. With one of the league’s smallest budgets, he kept them in the top flight for two seasons in a row – before taking the job in Turin.

The Croatian left Turin at the end of last season after three seasons in Serie A and took the Roma job in September this year after The Friedkin Group sacked fan favorite Daniele de Rossi. However, Juric didn’t even last two months as he was released from the Giallorossi four points clear of the relegation zone.

The big heavyweight rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Box Office on Saturday December 21st. Book Usyk v Fury 2 now!
