Maines Trans athletes The conflict flared up again this week when residents took action at school board meetings.
During a meeting of the School Board In the state capital Augusta on Wednesday, two women stripped off their clothes to protest the state’s policies that allow biological males to participate in girls’ sports and use girls’ locker rooms.
The stunt occurred while local parent Nick Blanchard delivered a monologue condemning the school board for failing to enforce state guidelines on the matter. Blanchard had spoken at the beginning of the meeting, but returned to the lectern at the end of the meeting with the protesting women behind him to do the deed.
“I’m about to show you how uncomfortable it is for young girls,” Blanchard told board members. “You feel uncomfortable? Because that’s how these young girls feel when a boy comes into their locker room and starts changing in front of them. Yeah, you feel uncomfortable, right? That’s how these young girls feel every time a little boy changes in front of them!”

As Blanchard’s speech continued, the two women continued to remove clothing.
“This is Maine’s capital! We should be an example to the rest of the state! Do you know what example you are setting? That we don’t care about the young girls in the rest of the state!” he added.
A similar stunt occurred at a school board meeting in California when local women’s rights activist Beth Bourne stripped during a speech at a Davis Joint Unified School board meeting on September 18th. Bourne also protested policies that allow men into girls’ locker rooms.
Both California and Maine’s state education departments are being sued by the U.S. Department of Justice over their policies allowing trans athletes in girls’ sports.
Several individual school districts in both states have passed their own resolutions to support compliance with President Donald Trump’s executive order to keep men out of women’s sports, while Democratic leadership in those states has refused to comply.
Elsewhere in Maine, the RSU 24 school board approved such a change last week.
Republican gubernatorial candidate David Jones spoke in favor of the resolution at the meeting.
“I have nothing against people who feel other than what they are, but in my mind’s eye and according to God, there is a man and a woman, not two different kinds of men, not two different kinds of women. Biology doesn’t lie,” Jones said.
“Let’s not back down. Let’s do what we have to do to protect every single girl in the state of Maine and make sure they are not harmed in any way.”
Maine has generally allowed trans athletes to compete against girls since 2005, when the Maine Human Rights Act banned discrimination based on gender identity.

The Maine Principals’ Association (MPA) updated its policies in 2024 to explicitly allow transgender students to compete on teams consistent with their gender identity.
The state, particularly its Democratic leadership under Gov. Janet Mills, is doing everything it can to defy Trump and protect the rights of its trans athletes to compete against girls and share girls’ locker rooms.
Many residents and now school districts have taken steps to oppose Mills. There have been several protests across the state by activists seeking to protect girls from trans rivals, including two in August outside the state Capitol.
A Survey by The American Parents Coalition found that of about 600 registered voters in Maine, 63% agreed that participation in school sports should be based on biological sex and 66% agreed that it was “only fair to limit women’s sports to biological women.”
The poll also found that 60% of residents would support a ballot measure to limit voter turnout In Women’s and girls’ sports biological females. This included 64% of the self-employed and 66% of parents with children under 18.
