After I spent the time with the Steamos and Windows models, I prefer the custom handheld software from Valve. While Lenovo does a good job to close the gap with additional buttons and control options, the attempt to use a desktop operating system with only one controller and a touchscreen can often be a frustrating experience. With Steamos, switch on the device, scan a QR code with your phone and download your games within minutes and save files in the cloud.
This Legion Go S is quite bulky, which I actually found more comfortable than slimmer options. It has built-in controller handles and a spacious button layout as well as triggers and bumpers that are luxurious and well placed. The screen is beautiful and bright and has a refresh rate of 120 Hz, although it is an IPS panel instead of the OLEDs that we see elsewhere. This model has 1 TB memory and 32 GB of memory as well as a microSD card slot if you really want to load games.
As with most non-nintendo gaming handhelds, you will probably have to optimize the settings or even the resolution in order to run the latest games smoothly. I found it more powerful than my aging steam deck and in games like Vampire survivor And Trackmania 2020, The type of games that I often play on the go had no problem and required very little. Much of this is thanks to the Steamos support, which means that games automatically better understand the functions of the device than Windows often with custom hardware.
I have the new Legion 2 in my hand and work on a complete assessment, but I know that it is a larger and more expensive device and also performs Windows from the box. If you want to search for a more compact device and use steamos for your play, this is a solid offer for a capable handheld.
