The new Starfleet Academy trailer offers much more than just lessons to learn

At San Diego Comic Con Earlier this yearour first look at what’s next Star Trek show, Starfleet Academyput the emphasis on the latter and remind us all that this show is about teaching the next generation of Starfleet officers. However, our latest look at the series today at New York Comic Con reminds you that this will still be one Star Trek show, with all the mysteries, drama and adventure that comes with it.

Today’s highlight Star Trek Universe panel at New York Comic Con, Paramount lifted the lid on the second trailer Starfleet Academywhich reveals many more anecdotes about the show than just the hopeful college vibe that was clearly on display at our first performance last summer. There are still enough of them – we get a lot of lessons (e.g. with new and well-known teachers). Voyageris Robert Picardo as a medical emergency hologram and discoveryTig Notaro and Mary Wiseman as Jett Reno and Sylvia Tilly, respectively) and plenty of young adult drama for this new class of academy recruits, the first to be welcomed into the titular academy (Slash Starship, the USS Athena) in over a century after Events of the Burn out of Star Trek: Discovery Season 3.

Of all the new students, however, this trailer focuses in particular on one who will advance the series’ larger narrative: Caleb Mir, played by Sandro Rosta. It turns out he has a strong connection to both of them Starfleet AcademyThe big bad Nus Braka (played by the legendary Paul Giamatti, a half-Klingon, half-Tellarite hybrid) and the Academy’s newest chancellor, Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter), named after his mother (Orphan Black And She-Hulk(Tatiana Maslany) was kidnapped by Braka when Caleb was a child. Ake finally finds the little boy again after fifteen years (and a history with Braka himself), and personally recruits Caleb to become an unlikely member of the academy’s new ranks… and perhaps be on equal terms with Braka again when he resurfaces.

Starfleet Academy Gina Yashere also stars in the role Athena First Officer and Academy Cadet Master Lura Thok (half Klingon, half Jem’Hadar), Karim Diané as Klingon Science Cadet Jay-Den Kraag, Kerrice Brooks as Kasqian Operations Cadet Sam, George Hawkins as Khionian Command Cadet Darem Reymi, Bella Shepard as Dar Sha Command Cadet Genesis Lythe, Zoë Steiner as Tarima Sadal, the daughter of the president of Betazed, and Oded Fehr as discovery‘s Admiral Vance as a guest. Today it was also confirmed that Stephen Colbert will serve as the voice of Starfleet Academy’s Digital Dean of Studies and distribute daily announcements across the school.

Star Trek: Starfleet AcademyThe 10-episode debut season begins streaming on Paramount+ on January 15 with a two-episode premiere.
