A rocket fired from Yemen hit an area of Tel Aviv overnight, slightly injuring 16 people with broken glass, the Israeli military said on Saturday, days after Israeli airstrikes hit Houthi rebels who had fired rockets in solidarity with the Palestinians .
Another 14 people suffered minor injuries as they rushed to shelters as air raid sirens sounded before the missile struck just before 4 a.m. Saturday, the military said.
The Houthi rebels issued a statement on the messaging app Telegram saying they had aimed a hypersonic missile at a military target they did not identify.
The attack comes less than two days after a series of Israeli airstrikes on Yemen’s Houthi rebel-held capital Sanaa and the port city of Hodeida killed at least nine people. The Israeli strikes were in response to a Houthi attack in which a long-range missile hit an Israeli school building.
The Houthis also claimed they carried out a drone strike on an unspecified military target in central Israel on Thursday.
According to the Israeli military, the Iran-backed Houthis fired more than 200 rockets and drones during the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. The Houthis have also attacked ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden and say they will not stop until there is a ceasefire in Gaza.
Israeli attacks on Thursday caused “significant damage” to Houthi-controlled Red Sea ports, “which will result in an immediate and significant reduction in port capacity,” UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said. The port of Hodeida was key to food deliveries to Yemen during the decades-long civil war.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the attacks by both sides risked further escalation in the region and would undermine U.N. mediation efforts.
