Without Ugly Sonic, there would be no Sonic film franchise

The face that gave birth to oh so many memes and ultimately a change in Sonic’s appearance in the Sonic the Hedgehog Films have stopped something Paramount Pictures would like to forget became an important touchstone in the history of the franchise. And it’s all thanks to the fans of the popular Sega video game who knew this Ugly Sonic wasn’t her Sonic.

During an interview with the Hollywood Reporter at the premiere for Sonic the Hedgehog 3The voice of Sonic in the film, Ben Schwartz, spoke about how Ugly Sonic is something he’s embracing now: “Maybe sometimes you need a little push to really look in the mirror and hear the fans and then really figure it out “whether you want that.” And that’s what we did.”

It was truly as if an internet audience of Sonic fans and casual moviegoers let out a collective scream of horror at the teeth, eyes, and sheer eerie expressions of the film’s botched, hideous improvement on the classic Sonic look expression came. Luckily, the studio and creative team worked quickly to give the icon its true form. “How often can you imagine a movie that really listens to the fans and the studio takes money and time to change it because they think it would make the movie better? I think that rarely, if ever, ever happens,” Schwartz said.

But Ugly Sonic never really died.

The memes continue and audiences are quickly shaking with social discourse anxiety when it comes to turning beloved characters into live action thanks to Ugly Sonic PTSD. One piece Fans are holding their breath because, for example, Netflix is not playing Ugly Sonic in the live-action film “Tony Tony Chopper” in the second season. And both How to train your dragonis toothless and Lilo and Stitch‘s Stitch has maintained her original cuteness in recent teasers for the upcoming live-action films. This is really all thanks to Ugly Sonic’s cautionary tale, because hey: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Ugly Sonic would later appear as a supporting character in Disney’s 2022 live-action hybrid film Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers and most recently he was seen in a Christmas sweater that Paramount Pictures officially released as a promotional gift. At the premiere Sonic3 Director Jeff Fowler also paid tribute to Ugly Sonic: “From the ashes of Ugly Sonic had to rise this beautiful film trilogy, this phoenix.” It was a necessary sacrifice, but yeah, thank you Ugly Sonic for the memories.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hits theaters this Friday.
